[Philadelphia] – Frederick C. Baumert, PE, CCS, a highly respected structural engineer and industry leader, is retiring after more than four decades of service with Keast & Hood. His career has been defined by technical excellence, mentorship, and a steadfast commitment to both new and historic structures.
Baumert joined Keast & Hood in 1980 after earning his B.S. in Civil Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University. He later obtained an M.S. in Civil Engineering from Drexel University and was named a principal in 1989. A legacy member of the firm, Fred followed in the footsteps of his father, Carl A. Baumert, Jr., PE, a former principal at Keast & Hood who practiced from 1958 to 2014.
Known for his keen ability to navigate project complexities, his calm demeanor under pressure, and his problem-solving expertise, Baumert has been instrumental in some of Keast & Hood’s most significant projects such as the Fashion District Renovation and the Longwood Gardens Fountain Reconstruction. His practical, pragmatic approach and strong communication skills have made him a trusted resource for teammates and clients alike.
“Fred’s impact on our firm and the industry at large cannot be overstated,” says Partner Denise Richards. “His depth of knowledge, dedication to mentorship, and ability to tackle challenges head-on have left a lasting mark on our team and the built environment.”
Baumert has contributed to numerous landmark projects, both new and historic, throughout his career. His passion for historic preservation is evident in his work, from navigating the complexities of existing structures to ascending the top of Billy Penn’s hat on Philadelphia City Hall. His expertise extends beyond engineering, as he brings an owner’s perspective to his work through his role on the Buildings and Grounds Committee at Bryn Mawr College, where he applies his insights on operating efficiency, serviceability, and life-cycle costs.
As he steps into retirement, Baumert leaves behind a legacy of excellence, mentorship, and a steadfast dedication to the structural engineering profession. His contributions will continue to shape Keast & Hood and the industry for years to come.
