Celebrating the Career of Thomas J. Normile, PE: Senior Principal Retires After 29 Years
[Philadelphia] – Thomas J. Normile, PE, a distinguished structural engineer and Senior Principal at Keast & Hood, is retiring after nearly 30 years with the firm. His career has been marked by technical expertise, a passion for problem-solving, and a deep commitment to mentoring the next generation of engineers.
Normile joined Keast & Hood in 1996 and quickly became known for his thoughtful approach to structural design, strong communication skills, and ability to transform complex challenges into simple, elegant, and effective solutions. He earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and gained structural engineering experience both domestically and abroad before joining the firm.
Throughout his career, Normile has delved into the engineering principles that shape each design, rigorously analyzing code, researching solutions, and applying his own structural creativity to every project. His collaborative mindset and passion for developing responsive structural designs have made him a trusted partner to architects, contractors, and clients alike.
“Tom’s ability to blend technical precision with creative problem-solving has made a lasting impact on our firm and the industry,” says Partner Denise Richards. “His mentorship, leadership, and unwavering commitment to excellence have elevated the work of everyone around him .”
Tom was instrumental in the realization of noteworthy projects such as the Statue of Liberty Life Safety Improvements, a project which, when completed in 2013, re-enabled visitation to the statue’s crown for the first time since 2001. Other important works include The Dumbarton Oaks Research Library in Washington DC, several buildings at Princeton University, and the Mormon Temple and 3737 Market Street in Philadelphia. Though dwarfed in size by the aforementioned structures, Tom’s passion for creative collaboration with his architectural clients may be most readily apparent in the nationally award-winning Arrupe Hall at Saint Joseph’s University wherein he helped devise the building’s unique perforated, curving brick façade.
Beyond his engineering work, Normile has been a dedicated leader in the Philadelphia design and construction community. He served as President of the Delaware Valley Chapter of the American Concrete Institute, Director of the Delaware Valley Association of Structural Engineers, Treasurer of the Carpenters’ Company of the City and County of Philadelphia and board member of Design Philadelphia.
As he steps into retirement, Normile leaves behind a legacy of innovation, leadership, and a passion for structural engineering that will continue to influence Keast & Hood and the broader AEC community for years to come.
