Nemours Children's Hospital | duPont Pavilion Skylight Infill

The duPont Pavilion at Nemours Children’s Hospital is a three-story, approximately 500,000-square-foot steel-framed facility that supports critical pediatric care within a highly specialized, continuously occupied healthcare environment. Long-span steel trusses at each level and an interstitial service floor between the roof and third level required carefully coordinated interventions to accommodate the renovation while maintaining uninterrupted hospital operations.

Renovations included the removal of four existing skylight shafts, infilling the roof openings with a concrete slab on steel deck, and restoring the third-floor service-level framing to maintain structural continuity. Within the outpatient services area, an engineered suspended sub-structure was introduced to support large-scale illuminated panel fixtures in the Public Waiting Area and Infusion Activity Space, resolving prior installation challenges while working within the constraints of the existing framing above.

These carefully planned upgrades allowed new architectural elements to be seamlessly integrated into the existing structure without disruption to patient care. The resulting spaces support the creation of bright, daylit inpatient and outpatient environments that enhance both clinical function and the patient and family experience.
