Following a feasibility study for the renovation of the boathouse, the design team moved forward with the select demolition, subsequent renovation and addition for the home of Penn Rowing. Project goals included increasing the overall size and functionality of the boathouse, expanded and upgraded locker rooms, improved training and team spaces, and preserving the historic features and façade of the historic landmark along Boathouse Row.
Longevity of the structure as a significant part of the iconic Philadelphia Boathouse Row and its importance to the university necessitated the team incorporate flood mitigation as a part of their design. Flood gates were installed at the ground level to allow water to go through the building in the event of storms and the rise of the Schuylkill River. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing elements were also elevated to the East side of the building, away from the river as a part of the design’s flood considerations.
