Doukakis and Normile present underpinning at SEI meeting
Keast & Hood Co. principals Dean Doukakis and Tom Normile presented “Underpinning and Stabilization of Older Structures” at the Structural Engineering Institute - Philadelphia Chapter monthly dinner meeting October 27.
The presentation reviewed fundamental principles and proper methods for successful underpinning, and touched on related situations of foundation improvement for increased column or wall loading. Underpinning is an important consideration when designing a new building or structure adjacent to an older building where a relatively shallow foundation may be present. Keast & Hood Co. engineers recently hosted similar underpinning presentations at the University of Pennsylvania and Princeton University.
The Structural Engineering Institute is part of the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers, which has over 20,000 members. For additional information, visit www.sei-dv.org.
