DC Office Partners with Live It Learn It & Local Students

Keast & Hood Co. recently partnered with Live It Learn It (LILI), a local non-profit organization that boosts academic achievement and student motivation in high-poverty DC public schools by supplementing conventional classroom instruction with rigorous, academically focused trips to DC’s world-class resources.

On May 14, structural engineers from the DC office led students from Turner Elementary School through the Washington National Cathedral, exposing them to the fields of structural engineering, architecture, and preservation by way of the ongoing work to repair damage from the 2011 earthquake.

Keast & Hood Co.’s Laura Burke and Live It Learn It’s Amanda Cooper conceived this venture on one of their mornign runs. Building upon a desire to instill a passion for math and science within today’s youth, Keast & Hood Co. partnered with LILI and the Washington National Cathedral to emphasize all that math and science can be.

Burke was joined by Jon Tung, Craig Swift, Chris Johnson, Leslie Morris, and Alexandra Hallheimer. Joe Alonso, Head Mason for the Washington National Cathedral restoration, also generously contributed his time to lead tours through the exhibits, belltower, and exterior gutters (pictured at left with students).
