Baumert to Co-Present Philadelphia City Hall Rehabilitation at DVASE January Seminar

Senior Consultant Carl Baumert, Jr., PE, will co-present “Philadelphia City Hall Exterior Column Capital Rehabilitation: A Capital Improvement” at the Delaware Valley Association of Structural Engineers January Breakfast Seminar on January 14, 2009 at the Hilton Garden Inn.

Baumert’s co-presenter is Nan Gutterman, AIA, Project Manager in the Historic Preservation Program at VITETTA. The two have worked together on the multi-phase restoration of City Hall since the early 1990s. Their presentation will describe the exterior envelope renovation project and the process to replace two column capitals.

Baumert has worked as a professional engineer for over 55 years, and was a principal of Keast & Hood Co. from 1963 to 1995. His present work consists mostly of condition assessment and rehabilitation of existing buildings and historic preservation. His work on the City Hall project began in January 1992 with interior and exterior surveys, additional studies of certain areas, and preparation of reports for the Historic Structure Report. Studies of materials and demonstration projects at the East Center Pavilion and Northeast Stair Tower occurred from 1994-1995. Detailed exterior surveys and documentation were authorized in 1998. Construction began in March 2000 and has continued to date. Throughout the process, Carl has been the structural engineer of record continuously for the entire design team.

Gutterman has been involved with the Philadelphia City Hall Project since the 1994 demonstration projects on the East Center Pavilion and the Northeast Stair Tower. She has been the project’s masonry restoration specialist since 1999.
