Keast & Hood participated on the team that performed a condition assessment and stabilization of the historic building.
The former Sterling Hotel was built in the 1830s beside the old Delaware Canal. Although the building was registered as a historic structure and identified as a local landmark, it was left unoccupied and fell into disrepair. Years of neglect and water intrusion caused extensive wood decay, risking a building collapse. Delaware City secured funding from the Delaware Department of Transportation for stabilization of the 11,500-sf building.
A team comprised of Philip E. Franks & Associates, 1:1:6 Technologies, and Keast & Hood performed an historic condition assessment and documented recommendations. For the subsequent stabilization, Keast & Hood designed structural repairs and reinforcements and upgraded floors for commercial use.
Keast & Hood is pleased to have been involved with the small, but significant project that bridges smart urban planning, historic preservation, and structural stabilization. The project was recognized with a 2009 Grand Jury Preservation Achievement Award from the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia.
