Keast & Hood provided structural engineering for the complete interior renovation of an historic building in Georgetown to house the African Union Mission to the United States of America.
The building framing system consists of load-bearing brick masonry walls, with reinforced concrete slabs at the first and second floors, and wood-framed floors on the upper level. As existing building drawings were not available, Keast & Hood performed an extensive field survey to document the existing structural system and adapt it for the proposed work.
New openings were cut into interior brick bearing walls, existing openings were enlarged, and in some cases, walls were completely removed and replaced with a structural steel frame. Existing walls were underpinned to insert the new elevator pit and new foundations. The renovated space includes a two-story conference and reception space, offices, and a new elevator.
The project earned a 2014 Award of Excellence for Interior Architecture from AIA DC.
