The new signature building brings the College of Education to the heart of the Old Dominion campus, giving new identity to the cornerstone of the University. The L-shaped building will house public and collaborative spaces containing classrooms, staff and faculty offices, and multi-purpose rooms.
The building is comprised of two four-story wings connected by a five-story tall tower composed of precast and glass cladding. The tower serves as the focal point of the building, with tall two-story height areas serving multi-purpose and theater spaces at the first and third levels. Structural steel braced frames were selected as the lateral system for cost efficiency and were carefully coordinated with building functions and circulation, with many unique geometries and connections required. Project deliverables were completed using Revit to contribute to a fully integrated Building Information Model during the design and construction processes. The $42 million project was completed in 2016.
