A contemporary and sustainable single-story concrete and structural steel addition contains a learning center and gallery for the 1916 Mercer Museum.
Built by historian and archaeologist Henry Mercer, the Mercer Museum is a six-story concrete castle with elaborate alcoves, niches, and rooms surrounding a central atrium. It houses a collection of implements ranging from farming tools to boats that predates the Industrial Revolution.
Keast & Hood provided structural design for the $8 million, 13,000-sf addition. The unique structure of the original building required careful detailing including rough-board, form-finished concrete walls and exposed structural steel. Sustainable features of the project include a green roof, recycled-content wall panels, and stormwater management.
