Isolation and Colic Barns | New Bolton Center

Structural engineering was provided for two new barns at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine.

The New Bolton Center includes a large-animal hospital, dairy, and laboratories. Keast & Hood has provided structural engineering design services at the Kennett Square campus since the late 1950s. The new 19,000-sf Isolation and Colic Barns are part of the James M. Moran, Jr., Critical Care Facility.

Keast & Hood provided structural engineering for a one-story structure consisting of two barn wings connected by a headhouse. The barns are built on reinforced CMU with timber roofs and a steel-supported mechanical loft. The isolation facility treats large animals with contagious diseases. It includes fully-enclosed, equine and non-equine holding stalls, each provided with air-lock vestibules. The colic barn treats primarily equine patients who suffer from the abdominal illness. It required less stringent controls. The project was complicated by a steeply-sloped site that necessitated tall retaining walls and a significant volume of engineered fill.
