Independence Mall Café

The new 1,300-sf cafe on Independence Mall features a contemporary design of moveable glass partitions and Cor-Ten steel rain screen walls.

Independence Mall Café is an outdoor food venue located across the mall from the Independence Visitor Center and Independence Hall. The new structure incorporates north and south walls of moveable glass partitions that open or close based on weather conditions, and east and west walls of Cor-Ten steel. The steel’s rusty red color complements the red brick of nearby historic buildings.

Keast & Hood provided engineering design for the café’s superstructure, which was built atop a system of concrete grade beams spanning the roof and columns of an underground parking garage. In addition to design of the primary building structure, Keast & Hood conceived and designed the system to support the custom Cor-Ten wall panels. The design allowed the contractor to execute construction with a sequence that kept all connections hidden, preserving the contemporary design aesthetic desired by the architects. The project was completed in 2007.
