Two integral parts of the university’s athletics program, the 1927 Hutchinson Gymnasium and Infill Building, underwent renovations to provide improved facilities for student-athletes and the campus community.
Keast & Hood provided structural engineering design for 98,000 sf of renovations. The project converted a former swimming pool into a new basketball practice gym; the original basketball practice gym was renovated as facilities for the gymnastics and fencing teams. The structural scope involved reinforcing existing pile foundations for added loads, raising the first floor lobby to the existing Palestra first floor level, and repairing existing concrete floor framing due to moisture damage from the pool deck and steam heating system. Structural design and underpinning for a new elevator, infill and new steel framing for additional basketball courts on the site of the former pool, and reinforcing existing steel roof trusses were additional components of the project. The renovated facility offers improved training facilities, updated locker rooms, and enhanced multi-use spaces, conference facilities, and circulation.
The project is LEED Gold certified.
