Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania

The newly expanded Emergency Room and Transition Unit traverse three distinct adjacent buildings in the lower level of the hospital.

Buried deep within the labyrinth created by successive construction campaigns, the 13,000-sf Emergency Department was reclaimed from a former radiology suite featuring mass concrete vaults upon which portions of the building above bear. Keast & Hood provided structural engineering for the complex reconfiguration of the space. Load-bearing walls were selectively removed, and loads were re-supported to enable the requisite clear sight lines from the nurse’s station into all of the treatment rooms.
