Fund for American Studies

Renovation of two early 20th century townhouses into a new headquarters involved structural upgrades and modification to 4,000 sf of space.

The Fund for American Studies offers youth programs in politics, economics, and philosophy. The organization teaches the values of freedom and how to apply those values to honorable leadership. Keast & Hood provided structural engineering for the renovation of two existing buildings – 1621 and 1706 New Hampshire Avenue in northwest DC. 1621 was built in 1905 for prominent women’s rights suffragist and Titanic survivor Helen Churchill Candee. The project provides additional office and meeting space for the fund’s headquarters. The structural scope included evaluation and upgrades of the roof structures for future deck considerations, upgrades to 1706 for conversion from office to commercial/assembly space, and upgrades to floor live load capacities.
