Facade Restoration | Philadelphia Museum of Art

Following a comprehensive condition assessment report prepared in conjunction with VITETTA, Keast & Hood was engaged to provide structural preservation design for the museum’s complete exterior envelope restoration.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is a city landmark and the internationally acclaimed home to more than 225,000 works of art. Designed by architect Horace Trumbauer and chief designer Julian Abele, in association with Zantzinger & Borie, the museum’s first section opened to the public in 1928.

Facade restoration involved cleaning, repointing, and repair of Mankato-Kasota stone, terra cotta and cast bronze ornamentation, bronze and wrought iron window grilles, roofing, and rainwater conductance systems. Keast & Hood worked closely with Philadelphia Museum of Art conservators on methods and materials used for treatment and repair.

The facade restoration was honored with a 2009 Grand Jury Preservation Achievement Award from the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia.
