Built in 1974, the Chamberlain Student Center is the heart of Rowan’s Glassboro campus, serving as a focal point for student activities, meetings, celebrations and student and faculty engagement. However, the student center was designed to served about a quarter of the current student body.
Expected to be complete in fall of 2023, the addition will provide facilities for meetings, events, offices and services to accommodate Rowan’s growing student body. The addition also will include essential technology and amenities, large indoor spaces for collaboration, public events and activities, and a redesigned outdoor plaza.
The structure is modeled after a Greek “agora,” a public open space used for gatherings, meetings and collaboration. The Greek theme is extended to the outside of the building with a colonnade around the perimeter of the addition against the full-height curtainwalls. The outdoor area includes a plaza and terrace, while the indoor floor plan includes an amphitheater. The new structure also includes the use of glulam beams and Cross Laminated Timber panels at the roof.
