Adaptive reuse and expansion transformed a campus icon into a state-of-the-art teaching, practice, and performance facility for Montclair’s music program.
Built in 1928, Chapin Hall includes a Spanish Mission style red tile roof and stucco exterior. The important campus building was renovated into the new home of the John J. Cali School of Music.
Keast & Hood provided structural engineering for the 29,000-sf adaptive reuse and 23,000-sf, two-story addition. Accommodating superior acoustics and modern mechanical systems required the design of a completely new lateral force resistance system. The addition incorporates custom, long-span steel trusses and a variety of structural measures to acoustically isolate the performance space from the mechanical systems also housed in the building.
The LEED registered (Silver certification anticipated) building includes a 250-seat recital hall, teaching studios, music practice and rehearsal rooms, and faculty offices.
