Commissioned in 1953 by Rabbi Mortimer J. Cohen, Beth Sholom Congregation represents the only synagogue designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It is a symbol of modern architecture amongst religious buildings and became a National Historic Landmark in 2007.
Keast & Hood was retained to provide structural design for improved accessibility to the main sanctuary and lower level of the synagogue. Structural scope included a new elevator and shaft within the confines of an existing communicating stair. The project was complicated by complex geometrics and elevations which differed through-out the building. Extensive field coordination was required during construction. The placement of the elevator shaft involved cutting through and exposing cast in place concrete and working around existing Chevron Beams. The modifications were sensitive to the building’s design and able to adhere to the tight project budget.
