Barnard Sculptures | Pennsylvania Capitol

The project represents efforts to reinforce the structural stability of the historic statuary groupings and to secure the 27 figures to their bases.

Restoration has been a fact of life for the George Grey Barnard-designed statuary groupings that flank the main entrance to the Pennsylvania State Capitol. Installed in 1911, the fragile Carrara marble groupings underwent stone restoration and structural stabilization efforts in 1928, 1947, 1962, and again in the mid-1970s to repair cracks and water infiltration, and to make the deteriorating stone more durable. As conservation science has advanced, so too, has the progress on the statues.

Keast & Hood developed pinning and reinforcements and conducted subsequent monitoring of cracks to prevent future deterioration.

The south group is titled “The Burden of Life” or “The Broken Law” and the north group is titled “Love and Labor” or “The Unbroken Law.” More than 27 figures represent Adam and Eve’s journey through despair and hope into a future reaping the benefits of labor and good citizenship.
