Baltimore’s Center Stage theater has undergone an immense transformation to become not only a leader of performing arts in Baltimore but also a destination for residents and visitors to the Calvert Street area.
The newly renovated theater includes a brighter and more open entrance, new marquee, and box office. Center Stage increased their education footprint by adding square footage through the renovation / repurposing of available existing space. Also included in the new space is a re-imagined Head Theater, an experimental black box performance space. A new Education Center and Costume Shop will be built as an addition to the existing building. State-of-the-art audiovisual and lighting effects permeate the design, pairing 21st Century technology with a historic backdrop.
Keast & Hood was engaged to provide structural engineering services for the feasibility study and following building renovation and modernization. A structural survey was conducted to determine the condition of all relevant structural elements. Part of the provided structural scope includes design for footings reinforced with micropiles to increase capacity & existing columns reinforced to accommodate loads from the vertical addition. The complicated nature of the building was captured through BIM and constantly updated. Careful coordination with the architect and contractor was also required
