Baltimore Basilica

Following the Mineral, Virginia, earthquake in August 2011, Keast & Hood provided a structural condition assessment and engineering of repairs to the earthquake-damaged structure.

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, located at 409 Cathedral Street, was constructed from 1805 to 1821. Designed by the noted American architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the Basilica is a fine example of the neoclassical style while conforming to the traditional Latin cross floor plan. A major renovation of the building was performed from 2003 to 2006, which included excavation of the undercroft and installation of a new roof.

Keast & Hood was engaged to provide a post-earthquake condition assessment of the 20,000-sf structure in the aftermath of the August 23, 2011 earthquake. Keast & Hood led a team of consultants to provide construction drawings and specifications for repairs to the Basilica in order to return it to its pristine pre-earthquake state. Repairs included masonry crack injection, cementitious anchor rod pinning, repairs to cladding materials, and related finish work including plaster and painting.

Earthquake restoration of Baltimore Basilica earned the Baltimore Heritage 2013 Restoration and Rehabilitation Award.
