Ashlawn Elementary School is a close-knit neighborhood school that prides itself on community spirit. An addition and renovation to the elementary school was proposed as a result of Arlington County Public Schools system's wide capacity and facilities studies.
Keast & Hood provided structural engineering services for a 27,000 square foot addition and renovation of the existing 69,000 square foot elementary school. Built in 1956, the existing building was renovated to create larger reconfigured classrooms and support facilities. The new three-story addition houses 12 classrooms and expanded common areas, including the media center, administrative offices, and multi-purpose room. The additional space expands the capacity of the school’s enrollment from 450 students to approximately 684 students. Modernizations were completed over a phased duration to allow the school to continue operation.
