Allentown Art Museum Expansion

Keast & Hood provided structural engineering design for a three-story, steel-framed addition and renovations within the museum.

Founded in 1934, the Allentown Art Museum houses a collection of 14,000 European and American works. The museum complex is comprised of a 1901 Neo-Classical church building and 1975 addition.

The museum’s west expansion included both a 9,000-sf addition and 27,000 sf of interior renovations. With a metal and glass façade, the addition contrasts with the 1901 building’s portico and complements its color palette. The addition houses galleries, an expanded museum shop, café, and classrooms. Framing modifications to the existing building enabled a new entrance and improved circulation. A one-story overbuild structure was also designed on the site of a former rear terrace.
