Keast & Hood is providing structural engineering for the National Park Service’s rehabilitation of the First Bank of the United States within Independence National Historical Park, supporting its transformation into a new public museum. Our work includes structural evaluation and targeted modifications to the historic building, including removal of an existing elevator. A new three-story addition creates a new accessible entry sequence with stair, elevator, and reception/lobby spaces aligned to existing floor levels. The addition features a concrete podium at the basement and first floor with steel framing above, wrapped in brick veneer to complement the original masonry; full-height curtain walls provide a clear visual separation between new and historic construction. To minimize impacts to the landmark structure, the steel framing is configured to strategically cantilever from column lines and limit intrusive connections to the historic masonry walls. Anticipated completion is 2026.
