Shoemaker Green | University of Pennsylvania

The creation of a new landscaped green for the University rests between two iconic athletic facilities, the Palestra and Franklin Field. The large green is host to both active and passive recreation as well as providing a connection of walkways from Smith and Locust walk to Penn park. The site contains benches and walkways with flexible hardscaped elements that are comprised of a variety of materials. The finished park incorporates sustainable design elements such as innovative storm water strategies and native plant and animal habitats. The project’s sustainability extended into construction through the recycling of existing site materials. 

Structural work involved design for retaining walls, seating areas, and structural frames for video screen/signage displays. Closer to the street, the design had to consider existing underground utilities during placement of foundations for light polls. Keast & Hood also worked to restore the existing War Memorial structure and Flagpole that was retained as part of the project
