Baumert Presents to ASCE SEI

Keast & Hood Co. Principal Fred Baumert, CCS, PE, presented Working on Historic Buildings: An Overview of Historic Materials and Methods to the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) Structural Engineering Institute at the organization’s meeting held Tuesday, March 18 at the Radisson Valley Forge Convention Center.

“Structural engineers involved in the restoration, repair, or adaptive reuse of historic buildings often have difficulty determining the basis of the original designs and the capacity of the structural system,” explained Baumert. “The presentation was designed to give structural engineers some exposure to what they might encounter in the field during a restoration or renovation project.”

Among the materials and methods covered in the presentation were 18th and early 19th century timber and masonry, 19th century cast and wrought iron, early steel, and advancement of fireproof construction techniques.
