Vicas Residence

Structural engineering was provided to renovate a grand 1925 residence and add a rear outdoor living pavilion.

A grand 1925 Four Square home in Cleveland Park, Washington, D.C., was extensively renovated and enhanced for contemporary living. Keast & Hood collaborated with Merle Thorpe Architects, builder Peterson and Collins, Inc., and homeowner / interior designer Martha Vicas. Keast & Hood provided structural engineering for the renovation and rear outdoor living pavilion addition. The design entailed significant reframing in the roof and attic and for the interior open stair. Poor soil conditions required significant underpinning and geotechnical interventions including helical piles to support portions of the rear addition. Structural design also was provided for a new lap pool built integrally with the rear site wall and landscape features.
