Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse

Keast & Hood provided structural design services for a design-build rehabilitation of the historic lighthouse’s iron screwpile foundation and superstructure and cottage deck framing.

Built in 1875 in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay as a replacement for an on-shore tower light, the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse is the oldest, unmoved, spider-type screwpile lighthouse in the U.S. Its foundation of nine wrought-iron screwpiles supports a one-and-a-half story iron and timber-framed lighthouse structure.

The design-build effort was necessitated by a prior condition assessment that identified corrosion and section loss on the structural members. Corrective measures include structural reinforcement of deteriorated elements and their connectors. Members were coated temporarily with epoxy polyamide to reduce further corrosion until funding is made available for installation of an advanced cathodic protection system.

Keast & Hood engineers have participated in ongoing volunteer and professional preservation efforts at the lighthouse, including annual volunteer work days each summer since 2006.
