Saint Alphonsus Church

The spire replacement project restored the original architectural design of the church using techniques and materials of the present day.

Nicknamed the “German Cathedral” for its Germanic neo-Gothic style, Saint Alphonsus Church, located in Baltimore, Maryland, was designed by Robert Cary Long, Jr., to model the Cathedral of Saint Stephen in Vienna. Finished in 1855, the landmark church and its 225-foot tower originally featured 36 stone pinnacles that were later removed.

Keast & Hood performed a structural condition assessment of the brick masonry church and designed the necessary reinforcement and replacement structure for new engineered replicas of the original pinnacles. Each of the new pinnacles is anchored through the remaining stone tabernacles into the existing brick piers, several of which are inactive chimneys.

The project earned a 2007 Craftsmanship Award for Concrete and Masonry Restoration from the Building Congress & Exchange of Metropolitan Baltimore, Inc.
