The multiple award-winning Casa Abierta is the product of an 800-sf addition and 1,200-sf renovation that transformed a typical suburban ranch-style house into a sophisticated modern home.
The Greenvale Residence (Casa Abierta) was a typical suburban house with small, enclosed spaces. Keast & Hood provided structural engineering for the additions and renovation of the single-story structure. The contemporary courtyard-style house now integrates indoor and outdoor living spaces. The design includes large sliding glass doors, an enlarged living room, and new kitchen and master suite wings. Exposed concrete masonry, sustainable cement board, raised platform decking, and wood bris-soleils form the modern architectural vocabulary.
The residential project won six awards in 2014: an AIA Maryland Design Award, AIA Potomac Valley Design Award, Builder’s Choice Custom Home Award, Inform Award, Remodeling Magazine Design Award, and a Residential Architect Citation for Renovation.
